The Walt L. Shamel (Dean North) Community Garden, located in the North Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, started keeping chickens in October of last year. The garden was named in memory of Walt L. Shamel Garden, one of its original and longtime caretakers, who died in 2003. The garden is a part of the Green Thumb community gardens, run by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
