Starting a New Brooklyn Food Cooperative

By kieran

A group of Brooklynites in the Fort Greene / Clinton Hill area are working to start a new local food co-op in the neighborhood. The founders of the Greene Hill Food Co-op cite the great need of a low-cost and affordable health food store that is accessible to the neighborhood’s residents. When founders DK Holland and Kathryn Zarcynski approached the Brooklyn Paper to publicize the idea of starting a new food co-op in the Fort Greene / Clinton Hill community a little over a year ago, they got an overwhelming positive response.

Although the Greene Hill Co-op is still in the planning stages, there is a lot of momentum carrying it forward. The co-op (as well as the Park Slope Food Co-op) was featured on Brooklyn Independent Television’s “Sector B” a few months ago (jump to 2:00 - 6:45 for the relevant part):

Right now, the Greene Hill Co-op is holding monthly general meetings and also more frequent committee meetings. The next general meeting will be held on March 18, 2009 at BRIC Studio 57 Rockwell Place b/w Fulton & DeKalb at 7 p.m. All those interested are encouraged to attend.
